Battle of the Makeup Setting Sprays! Urban Decay vs. e.l.f. vs Avon

PicMonkey Collage

If you have been a reader of this blog for any length of time you know that I have oily acne prone skin.  So I’m always looking for a way to prolong my makeup wear and keep it from melting off my face and becoming an oily, gross mess.      With some foundations I can tell a difference when I use a setting spray and with others it makes no difference at all, my foundation will crease and/or just disappear.   No setting spray has been able to stop my oil production so I do still have to use a blotting sheet and/or powder touch up, but I can go longer and/or not use as much powder if I don’t use a spray.

Urban Decay::

Several years ago while perusing the aisle of Sephora (dangerous territory…) I came across the Urban Decay Setting Sprays.  UD has three types of sprays, De-Slick (oily skin), All Nighter (described as a long lasting spray… so normal skin?) and Chill (cooling and hydrating). I have bought and used De-Slick and All Nighter, I think that they both performed the same way on my skin.  De-slick may have been a tad more mattifying but not that much to make a difference in my mind.  Over all I think this product has helped in my fight against oily skin and I think that it does its job as it claims. A full size bottle is 4oz and the price is $30.00 which breaks down to $7.50 per ounce.  So this isn’t exactly budget friendly but I don’t use it every day.  I’d say out of the days I wear makeup (which is usually 5-7) I will use a setting spray 2 times a week.

e.l.f. has a Studio Makeup Mist which it advertises as “hairspray for your face”.  Which in the world of setting sprays sounds about right!  Out of the three, this is the least effective for me.  e.l.f. has a lot a great products that I love and swear by and others aren’t so great.  On the website this product has a 4.1 rating out of 5 so somewhere there are people that love this, I am not one of them.  When first applied it does what the UD and Avon sprays do. But I find that out of the three this one is the least long lasting and I have to do more touchups.  Also the spray nozzle is strange and sometimes it gets stuck or it sprays out in more of stream then a spray.  For someone which combo or dry skin, this could be an option for you.  However my skin is very very oily and this was a no go.  But for $3.00 for 2.2 oz I would say give is a try, you never know it could work for you!

Avon Makeup Setting Spray is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!  It does the same thing for my makeup as the UD spray at a fraction of the cost!  I almost didn’t buy this when I say it in a catalog as I just assumed that it wouldn’t work as well as the UD.  I talked myself into buying it for review purposes and I’m so glad I did.  I will not be buying another UD setting spray again as long as Avon makes this.  I really can’t believe that it does everything the UD spay does but is soo much cheaper!  The size is the same 4oz but the price… are you ready for it…$10.00!! that is $2.50 an ounce compared to $7.50.  At this price you could get three times the product for what you pay for one bottle of UD Setting Spray.  And Avon is always having sales, so I make sure to stock up and got it for even cheaper.

The bag is cute as this months theme is “Beauty Schooled” and its a pencil bag!  I like the design with the orange polka dots but it does have that strong weird plastic smell….

First up we have….

Dr. Brandt’s Pores No More, I’ve heard great things about this so I’m interested to try it.

Ipsy Says:: A cult favorite, Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer is Dr. Brandt’s quick fix for flawless, photo-ready skin. It is the miracle base to create the perfect skin canvas for long-lasting makeup and well-preserved skin. This velvety formula absorbs excess oil, minimizes pores, blurs fine lines and is resistant to sweat and humidity. Prime, touch-up and treat while perfecting your makeup.

Key Benefits:
    – Minimizes the appearance of pores by diffusing light
    – Blurs imperfections & lines
    – Erases shine & mattifies skin
    – Absorbs oil, reduces shine and helps regulate sebum production
    – Antibacterial action for a healthy skin
    – Acts as a shield to prevent make-up from clogging pores

Lara Says:: The texture of this reminds me of Too Faced Primed and Poreless Skim Smoothing Face Primer which I like.  But this has a definite strange smell, like an earthy, grass like smell… I don’t know it just smells funny, but I didn’t notice it too much after I rubbed in into my hand.

Ipsy Says:: Treat your lips with this ultra-moisturizing lip balm from Absolute New York. This lightly tinted, creamy, conditioning formula softens, smooths, and protects lips for a seriously kissable pout. Discover this must-have balm for sensationally soft and luscious lips!

Lara Says:: :I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that this is not Green!  How can you have a lip balm in the flavor Green Apple and it not be Green!!  In other news, this seems like a good formula and I’m almost out of my Rose Salve that I keep at my desk at work so this shall be the new desk lip balm.

Somehow this didn’t make it in the group picture… Hmm kinda like school yearbook pictures!

Ipsy Says:: Bigger. Blacker. Badder. Urban Decay’s ultra-creamy, lengthening and volumizing mascara features triple-black pigments and a deeply nourishing ingredient blend. Perversion Mascara gets you sexy in one stroke, yet it won’t quit until you say when.

Lara Says:: I’ve heard a lot about this product because it was WAY hyped up.  From what I’ve heard from people who have tried it, its a good mascara but its not phenomenal so we shall see…  and for real what is up with makeup brands making everything sexual?!  Not a fan, but that’s a post for another day…

Ipsy Says:: Coastal Scents Forever Blush boasts 18 perfectly pigmented, powder blushes with a long-lasting rush of color. Complete with a mirror, these color-packed compacts go a long way.

Lara Says:: I have not tried any Coastal Scents make up products but I do have an eye shadow brush that I like that I received in a past Ipsy Bag. From first swatch theses are soft and seem blendable.  According to the website I received the colors ‘Elegant’ and ‘Fresh’ , they are not marked on the packaging but according to a quick web search the shimmer pink is ‘Elegant’ and the matte peachy brown is ‘Fresh’.

Ipsy Says:: Sensual and exotic, that’s the effect that Silk Kajal Kohl Eye Pencil delivers. Just like the traditional Kohl, but with the modern ease and control of a pencil. Giving a semi-matte finish that is also smudgeable, Silk Kajal Kohl’s soft tip is ophthalmologically-tested and gentle enough to be used on the inner eye.

Lara Says:: New brand so I’m excited to try this out! The last picture is after I left the liner for about a minute and then ran my finger down it.  So it looks like its smudge-able but also has staying power if you just want a dark line.  There will definitely be a review to come on this product.

August Hits and Misses

Holy Cow its September! This year has really flown by, my mother was right time flies the older you get. Onward to hits and misses from the past month….

Tea Rose Perfume by Perfumer’s Workshop:: $12.40 from Amazon

I love the scent of Rose and this perfume is perfect because it is light but still has a strong enough scent that you don’t have to douse yourself in it!  You all know what I mean, with some perfumes there is no middle ground, one spritz isn’t enough and two spritzes you smell like you have bathed in a vat of perfume!  The top notes are Rose, Bergamot and Lily, Middle notes are Tuberose, Jasmine and Cedar and the Bottom is Amber, Rosewood and Sandalwood. If you aren’t sure about this scent you can get the 1 ounce bottle for $7.99.  Some Rose scented perfumes smell like Granny or as my sisters and I called them growing up ” old lady perfume”.  But this has a nice fresh scent that isn’t too heavy and give off  that you live with 14 cats and are trying to cover the scent of mothballs.

Fresh Peach Bubble Delight Bubble Bath:: $8.00 from Avon

I take a bath once a week to unwind and relax and that bath usually involves bubbles.  I have several different bubble bath scents from Avon, but I seem to be reaching for this one a lot. The scent is amazing and lightly scents your skin and Avon has the bubble formula down to a science, its amazing! They often run deals (seems like mostly in the summer) like 2 for $9.99.

Anti-Bacterial Pocketbac Sanitizing Hand Gel in Island Margarita:: $1.75 from Bath and Body Works

This was gifted to me and I totally forgot about it until I was cleaning out a bag.  Island Margarita is one of my new favorite scents from B&B.  The scent is a blend of mandarin lime and white nectarine, it smells like a vacation to a tropical island.  B&B is also good about running sales and I have picked up these PocketBac Sanitizers  five for $5.00.

Wash-Off Waterproof Mascara::  $6.50 from Avon

I have talked about this mascara before and I used it all through the month of July.  As I’ve said before, I live in Florida, it is hot and humid here. During the summer months, make up tends to melt off your face and with mascara you can end up looking like a raccoon. This mascara does not melt or flake and gives lashes length and definition.  I was able to get two mascaras for $6.00 during a recent sale.

Urban Decay Naked Basics:: Paid $15.00 Via Tophatter retails for $27.00

This palette is matte and features six neutral shades. The colors included are  Venus (soft, off-white demi-matte), Foxy (cream bisque matte), Walk of Shame (very light nude matte), Naked2 (taupe matte), Faint (warm, dusty brown matte) and Crave (deepest, darkest brown/black matte).  Love love love this palette you can create endless eye looks just with the colors provided or use them as a base and add other colors from your eye shadow collection. Urban Decay has amazing eye shadow and I am very pleased with this palette.

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Translucent Powder:: Paid $3.99 at Ross retails for $13.99

I am labeling this one a miss.  The formula is pretty good but the packaging sucks!  The brush is horrible and it is a pain to get the powder out.  I have used other translucent powders just as good as this one that were not a pain to get out of the package.  And I have only been able to find this online and I will definitely not pay $14.oo for this product plus shipping.

What were your favorites from the month of August?  Have you tired any of my hits and misses?  If you haven’t used Tophatter check it out and use my code d966f to receive a credit of $5.00!
