Natural/Home Remedies for Dandruff

If you are a regular reader you may remember a few months ago in my monthly favorites I listed Walmart Dandruff shampoo because I was having an issue.  I thought that it was cleared up, but alas it decided to visit again in November.  Shampoo was doing nothing for me so I decided to try some Natural Home remedies (which is what I should have done in the first place) and hallelujah relief at last!  So let’s dive in…

  1. Tea Tree/Melaleuca oil

As a preteen/teen my face, hair really every part of my body was an oil silo.  It was pretty horrible! When my body was going through all of the lovely hormone changes that happen when you “grow up” my hair was an nasty oily mess, but I also had dandruff.  Say what?! Yes and apparently it is quite common and tea tree oil was something I used to combat both issues.  It is amazing what can be found in nature.  If you are going to the store and buying a shampoo, you will not be able to find anything that can combat oily hair and dandruff.  Clarifying shampoo’s to deal with your oil, will dry out your hair and make your dandruff worse. Moisturizing shampoo’s for dryness and dandruff will weigh down your hair and make it look (if possible) even more greasy.

How I use it:: I use this two ways, I add a drop or two to my normal shampoo (not the bottle just to what I have in my hand for that shampooing).  The second is to add 3 teaspoons to 16 ounces of water in a spray bottle and lightly mist your scalp. Make sure you shake the solution well because the oil and water will separate.  When my dandruff gets really bad, I use both of these steps.

Where to find:: I buy all of my essential oil from Young Living oils, they are more expensive but I feel better about it then what you can buy at the drugstore, especially for something I am putting on my body.  If I am using oils for aromatherapy I use the cheap stuff.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

You can also you Apple Cider Vinegar as a rinse for dandruff laden hair after shampooing.  I have also done this remedy and it works really well and you may be more likely to have apple cider vinegar hanging around your house compared to Tea Tree oil.

How I use it:: Mix 1 part  apple cider vinegar to 1 part warm, water. Apply the vinegar rinse after shampooing, then rinse it all out.  Apple cider vinegar is also a great condition so you can leave it on for a few minutes for extra conditioning.

Where to find:: I like to use Braggs apple cider vinegar but any brand will work!

  1.  Listerine Mouth Wash

Yes you did read that correctly.  If you don’t have the first two products in your house and are desperate you more than likely have mouth wash. This works like the other two because of their anti-fungal properties which prevents the dandruff causing yeast Malassezia from growing

How I use it:: wash hair with your regular shampoo, then rinse with an alcohol-based mouthwash. Follow with your regular conditioner.

Where to find:: Hopefully your bathroom…unless you have natural amazing smelling breath

***Warning***

Make sure to avoid any open cuts or wounds, because it will burn like fire!  Also if you have freshly shaved legs and get any of these remedies on your legs…. Let’s just say personal experience says you may bring down a shower curtain trying to rinse it off…

I hope these remedies are able to bring you relief like they have for me!
