The Wondrous Uses of NaHCO3

NaHCO3 is also known as Sodium Bicarbonate or Baking Soda!  Baking soda is extremely versatile and has a myriad of uses.  I have been using it for several years in many different ways and I thought I would share a few with you.

Toothpaste

My mother taught me at a young age that if we were ever out of toothpaste to use baking soda and peroxide.  I would say probably every few weeks I brush my teeth with this combination and it leaves your mouth (and breathe) fresh and clean.

Facial and Body Scrub

I use baking soda as a facial scrub every other day.  It is gentle enough that you can use it every day if you so choose.  I mix the baking soda with honey, Coconut oil, or whatever liquid face wash and exfoliate my face. When I use it on my body, I mix it with whatever liquid body wash I have in the shower.  I really think that using this on my face has helped clear up my complexion.

Clarifying for your Hair

You could spend five plus dollars on a clarifying shampoo or you could add some baking soda to your regular shampoo. The baking soda removes the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is cleaner and more manageable.

Clean your Fruits and  Veggies

Using baking soda is a great way to clean the dirt and residue off of fresh fruit and vegetables. Just sprinkle a little on a clean damp sponge, scrub and rinse.

Pots and Pans

Remove baked-on residue by shaking a generous amount of baking soda on pots and pans. Then add hot water and dish detergent, let sit for 15 minutes and wash as usual. The gunk and grime is so easy to clean off!

Clean out that Nasty Drain in the Kitchen

To deodorize a drain, pour about ½ cup baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup vinegar. After 15 minutes, pour in boiling water to clean out the residue. The baking soda and vinegar bubble up (remember that volcano from elementary school ?) which makes this a fun cleaning task for kids or kids at heart.

Skin Irritants

Apply a baking soda paste with water to rashes, insect bites, and poison ivy irritation.  You can also sprinkle a generous amount into your bath water and take a nice soak.

There are numerous other uses for baking soda and a quick Google search will bring up a countless uses for this amazing white powder! Do you use baking soda in your daily routine? If so share it with me in the comments below.  Also shout out to Arm and Hammer for coming out with this nifty plastic canister.  I used to put my baking soda in a jar for keeping in my bathroom . The paper box would get soft and sometimes the baking soda would clump up because of the moisture in the bathroom, but no more!!
